Road trip planning across Portugal from Lisbon
Permalink

I'm heading to Portugal next week for a big road trip. Flying into Lisbon and from there I want to explore in every direction. Can I find a car in Lisbon for a long-term rental without mileage limits and all those restrictions? Also, what places should I absolutely hit when driving out from the capital? I want to see more than just the typical tourist spots everyone goes to.

Portugal's small enough that you can cover serious ground without spending entire days behind the wheel. The coastline alone gives you endless options depending on what you're after. If you want dramatic scenery, the drive down to Sagres takes you past cliffs that drop straight into the Atlantic. Heading inland toward Évora gets you into medieval towns with Roman ruins scattered around. Up north past Coimbra the terrain shifts completely and you hit wine regions that don't see many tourists compared to the Douro area everyone talks about.

Traveling without a solid plan for getting around kills momentum before you even start exploring. You waste the first day figuring out transport instead of hitting the road toward all those places you researched. Check out where to rent a car in Lisbon here: https://getrentacar.com/en-US/portugal/lisbon . You'll find better deals from local owners who don't nickel and dime you on mileage or insurance add-ons. They're also more flexible about drop-off locations if you decide to end your trip somewhere other than where you started.
